Gender Equity Strategy

There has been tremendous development pertaining to womens empowerment and emancipation in Bangladesh. The National Women Development Policy and Action Plan is in place to realize the recommendations of Beijing Platform for Action. The HPN sector had addressed the gender issues at length and has emphasized mainstreaming gender issues in all operational plans. It order to provide guidance, the Ministry felt the necessity of a Gender Equity Strategy. At the beginning, the then Gender Issues office of the Ministry developed Gender equity issue Paper. Afterward Mr. Jafar Ahmed Chowdhury, Deputy Secretary prepared a document titled ‘Gender Mainstreaming in Health: Towards Gender Strategy. This was circulated in a three day workshop in February 2001 resulting in the draft Gender Equity Strategy. On June 2004, 2001 an extended meeting of the Gender Advisory Committee and the line directors approved the gender Equity Strategy. The Strategy enumerates probable gender issues and strategic objectives under the following heads:

  • Essential Service Package
  • Human Resource Development
  • Behaviour Change Communication
  • Support Services and
  • Sector Wide Management
